something of a departure into uncharted territory for ostgut ton on the fiftieth single release of the label. following berghains hugely sucessful art exhibition alle which showcased the many visual artists among the members of staff at berghain/panorama bar, ostgut ton shows they cannot be pinned down easily to one genre by offering their anniversary release to two artists of the extended ostgut family who normally wouldnt be associated with what you might have come to expect from the label. shambhu the undisputed queen of the berghain bar ladies (she regulary holds court every saturday upstairs at her very own gitter bar) and rummelsnuff the germanic hulk of the berghain/laboratory bouncers come up with enchanting and surprising results. the release comes pressed as a 7 inch (a first for the label and limited to 500 hand-numered copies) and each side is given to one of the two artists.

chicagos richard pegue was one of the most intriguing figures to come out of the chicago soul scene in the 1960s and 1970s. raised during the citys fertile doo-wop era, pegue immersed himself in music immediately. he cut his chops as a mobile dj, record store clerk and recording artist before stepping into the booth as one of chicagos most enduring radio personalities to grace the citys airwaves. the nickel and penny labels featured in this compilation are twin sides of the same eccentric coin, pegue himself.

alex and bill met 16 years ago when bill signed one of alex s first productions (is this the rhythm? by rhythmnvibe) to a new york label he was running. alex, whose father lives in the us, was a regular visitor to the states and they sent many happy hours together hanging out at the sound factory bar and comparing maw dubs. when bill returned to the uk in 1996, they had a few sessions together making house music, though neither of them can remember why they never finished anything or, indeed, what became of the tracks. fast forward a few years and they finally got back into the studio to make sweet music together under the moniker hotel motel. since then they have created a rich seam of work that some have already described as, like salvador dali with his pants down being fellated by deirdre barlow. few would disagree.

just like different fishes can be found in different grounds, also the acoustic tales of the micronaut take place in different regions of the emotional landscape: sometimes warm, sometimes fresh � sometimes calm and stagnant, sometimes lively and floating. and just like all the fishes are connected by the water surrounding them, also this album has its connecting element: a very individual and independent groove. this groove comes with a lot of surprises. for instance, when a guitar chord from the acoustic band atmosphere of gruen- dling suddenly gets tangled up in a loop and introduces an unexpected but coherent change into the direction of broken, electronic beats. or when the emotional world music elements of schleie mix up with exciting halfstep rhythms. sophi- sticated arrangements, unusual instrumentations and intense emotions- these are the main attributes of friedfisch . though the experimental character of this work does not really aim the dance floor, it still keeps connected to this place: two sensitive remixes by mollono.bass represent the upbeat for an entire series, being exclusively released on vinyl.

kill the pain: epic is the only way to describe the extended intro of kill the pain, featuring acoustic guitar and an earnest male vocal. then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline reboots the texas chainsaw massacre. an aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher.
letting go: teaming up with kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. subsequently, side effects of letting go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.
